This week is Spring Break in metro Atlanta and we enjoyed a long weekend trip to the Golden Isles of Georgia, which are around 6 hours drive from Atlanta. The main three islands of the Golden Isles are St Simons, Jekyll and Cumberland and we spent a day exploring each one. On our first day, we took a boat to Cumberland Island which is a National Seashore run by the National Park Service. The island is only accessible by boat (unlike the others which have causeways and bridges) and we made our reservations a month in advance as visiting the island is very popular. Camping is allowed on the island but there are no facilities. We can honestly say that Cumberland Island is one of the few places we have visited that has not felt like Georgia; It was beautiful, unspoilt, pristine wilderness, no stripmalls or cars in sight, and we would love to go back again!
