Over the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May it was time for our next road trip. Together with Jonathan's parents, who were visiting us for two weeks, we drove 3 hours north to North Carolina and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was good to be back in the nature for a few days, even though the trip involved plenty of driving. None of us can believe it; school is finished for the summer! The girls have had a fantastic time in 2nd and 3rd grade and they now have a ten week break before they have to be at the bus stop at 7.15am again!
On Sunday 22nd May it was time for Skolavslutning at the Atlanta Swedish School. On Saturday the girls took part in their first concert. Kerstin has been taking piano lessons for two months and Claudia has been learning the violin since October. It was a very proud parenting moment to see them play in front of an audience, and they were both fantastic of course!
Every May, our excellent art teacher, who is also an exhibiting artist here in Georgia, creates an Art Exhibition at school. She displays one piece of art from each student and there are more than 850 students on campus this year so it has been a huge undertaking. The results are impressive and I was excited to find artwork by both girls displayed in the main entrance (rather than at the furthest end of the least visited corridor!)
We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon out in the sun today at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, which has been on our list of places to visit for a long while. The Nature Center is 25 minutes drive north east from us - further up the river. All Moms had free entry today since it was US Mother's Day! Today we finally made it to the local Farmers Market, about 15 minutes drive away. We weren't sure what to expect, but we came away with our bags full and wallets empty and will definitely be going back again. This market is the largest producer-only farmers market in Georgia, meaning that everything for sale has been grown, raised, or made by the seller, ensuring fair prices for both the vendors and the consumers. Yesterday was Field Day at school and it was an impressive event. Each class rotated through twelve different activities during two hours, including an inflatables obstacle course in the gym, a karate lesson with local professionals, tug-of-war, relay races, and 'dunk the teacher'!
Kerstin has been going to Robotix Club after school once a week and today we were invited to the end of term open session. It was impressive to see the range of technology the children were working with, and the instructor was very complimentary about Kerstin's skills.
