The global slime craze is alive and slimy in our house and the girls have been spending every spare cent on slime ingredients recently. Of course, we've read the horror stories in the press about the potential side-effects of the slime contents on skin, so we're keeping a close eye on the slime activities. (Although we're trying not to notice the local slime selling business being run from the basement!)
The World of Coca-Cola has been on our list of places to visit since we moved here, but we've never managed to muster up enough enthusiasm before now! The girls were very excited to finally have the perfect reason to go with our visitors currently here, and today we all Ubered downtown to the home of the most famous soft drink in the world.
Atlanta is proud to be the birthplace of Coca-Cola and the company sponsors much of what happens in the city and the state. We had fun seeing all the exhibits, learning the history and mystery of the drink, enjoying a crazy 4D film and tasting coca-cola drinks from around the world! We are very excited to finally have visitors again as our friends Laura and Meurig and their family are here to stay with us over Easter. Everyone has been enjoying the wonderful hot weather; Meurig and Jonathan have been bike riding, we've had a grill, walked along the Chattahoochee river, played tennis and enjoyed sunbathing on the balcony.
Yesterday we drove for an hour and a half to the North Georgia Mountains to visit Camp Toccoa, a traditional residential summer camp with a range of outdoor activities including canoeing, swimming, horseback riding, archery and high ropes. We all liked the look of it so the girls are now looking forward to going away for a week of summer camp in June. On the way there we stopped for lunch at Toccoa Falls, and on the way home we found a local Farmers Market and tasted Georgian boiled peanuts, which were very salty and hot!
This week is Spring Break in metro Atlanta and we enjoyed a long weekend trip to the Golden Isles of Georgia, which are around 6 hours drive from Atlanta. The main three islands of the Golden Isles are St Simons, Jekyll and Cumberland and we spent a day exploring each one. On our first day, we took a boat to Cumberland Island which is a National Seashore run by the National Park Service. The island is only accessible by boat (unlike the others which have causeways and bridges) and we made our reservations a month in advance as visiting the island is very popular. Camping is allowed on the island but there are no facilities. We can honestly say that Cumberland Island is one of the few places we have visited that has not felt like Georgia; It was beautiful, unspoilt, pristine wilderness, no stripmalls or cars in sight, and we would love to go back again!
