We didn't have big plans for adventures this weekend as Claudia was sick for most of the week with a type of flu. We decided to go for a short walk on Saturday at Cheatham Hill which is part of the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. It turned out to be another fascinating civil war history lesson. The weather was also surprising; rising from -1 in the morning to 18 degrees in the afternoon. Is winter almost over? Atlanta schools and businesses closed early on Friday in anticipation of storm winds, freezing temperatures, ice and snow. The view out this morning was a bit disappointing for the girls, especially after seeing all the pictures of snowy Gothenburg this week. The girls are desperate to get out and play in some proper snow! The girls had a day off school for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday 18th January so we went to the local ice rink for the first time. They hadn't been on the ice since March but they were soon zooming around happily. Perhaps the next challenge is to sign them up for ice skating lessons...
On Sunday 17th January we visited Red Top Mountain State Park, 30 minutes drive north and situated around the shores of Lake Allatoona; a man-made lake providing water and hydroelectric power to the nearby area. The scenery here reminded us Sweden and it was only 2 degrees today, so the park wasn't too busy! On Saturday afternoon we ventured for the first time into downtown Atlanta to the Centennial Olympic Park. The park is Georgia's legacy to the 1996 games as well as part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the city. It is surrounded by many famous Atlanta landmarks and we ended up taking a spontaneous ride on the SkyView Atlanta ferris wheel, situated next to the park, which was great fun! Friday 15th was the monthly teacher appreciation day at school and this time the PTA served up a mexican buffet from one of the local fast food outlets that sponsor our school and some very yummy sweet treats. Yum!
Remember the Swedish Julmarknad with julpyssel and our discovery of the Atlanta Swedish School? Well, we signed the girls up for Svenska Skolan and while Susan was visiting the History Center on Sunday afternoon, Jonathan took the girls to their first Swedish lesson! Va Roligt! On Sunday Susan went to the Atlanta History Center which is only 10 minutes drive away. It is a fascinating museum. There are 6 huge exhibition galleries as well as extensive grounds and historic houses on the site. Another weekend arrived so it was time for another local walk along the Chattahoochee River. Today's new trails were just 10 minutes drive away.
To stop ourselves feeling too sad about Uncle Pete going home, we decided it was time for our final outing of the winter break and we drove to the North Georgian Mountains again. This time we headed north west near the border with Tennessee (to our fifth State Park in the five months we've been here, there are 38 left to visit!) It was a beautiful day; clear, still and cold (4 degrees). |
