Today was Great American Eclipse day and therefore time for more excitement and hype, since this was the first total eclipse since 1979. School was extended by 30 minutes and the day was spent doing eclipse related activities leading up to the 97% eclipse visible here in Atlanta around 2.35pm. The weather conditions were perfect and all local children were provided with special eclipse glasses. Many places including Jonathan's workplace, had eclipse viewing parties. People were desperately trying to get hold of eclipse glasses right up to the last minute and the local prices went sky high! #School
Today Kerstin compete in her first local Martial Arts Tournament, representing her dojo by competing against similar aged and ranked students. She performed really well in her group, winning a bronze medal for sparring, a silver medal for board breaking and a gold medal for demonstrating form. Well done Kerstin!
We had a great time with Uncle Pete visiting!
Today we enjoyed a first visit to Arabia Mountain, around 40 minutes drive south east of the city. The 'mountain' is a 290m high monadnock, or isolated granite outcrop, situated within a larger Nature Preserve. We enjoyed a very sweaty hike to the top in the heat and then a longer walk skirting the base of the mountain and on around one of the mountain lakes through the pine and oak forest. After that it was time for a picnic before facing the weekend Atlanta traffic for the slow drive home.
Today Uncle Pete and I volunteered at the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The organisation had been a case study on an online course I took on Social Enterprise and I have been wanting to go and visit. We spent the morning weighing and bagging fresh organic produce which will be sold at 'pop-up' fresh market stalls set up outside various Atlanta metro stations. The produce is subsidised and one of the main objectives for the project is to reach buyers who wouldn't normally shop for fresh produce due to high prices and lack of convenient availability. It was an interesting experience: there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available and I hope to return.
Today Kerstin started fifth grade and Claudia began fourth grade. They were both excited about being back at school and didn't even mind getting on the school bus at 7.04am! They both had a great day. #School
