Jonathan recently got the opportunity, together with his work colleagues, to go and watch the Atlanta Braves play at their famous Turner Field baseball park against the LA Dodgers. Originally built as the Centennial Olympic Stadium in 1996 for the Atlanta Olympics, the stadium was then converted into a baseball park in 1997 as the new home of the team. Next year, the Braves are moving to a brand new stadium currently being built, ten minutes drive from us.
On Saturday 16th April we were unexpectedly given some tickets to an event at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta's historic famous resting place. We weren't quite sure what to make of an evening of light and art in a cemetery but since we are embracing new cultural experiences we went along! On Friday 8th April it was time for the long drive back to Atlanta. We planned a detour on the way to visit the Okefenokee Swamp, the famous home of Georgia's alligators, turtles, black bears and a vast array of plants, birds and other animals. It was good to be back in nature again and the girls had learnt about the Okefenokee at school so it was exciting to finally visit. For our second day at Disney on Thursday 7th, we arrived at Magic Kingdom in the early afternoon and stayed into the evening so that we could enjoy the Electrical Parade, Lights Show and Fireworks Show. We all had a great time and we're pleased that we've now 'done' Disney. It definitely lived up to the girls' expectations and none of us can still quite believe that we've actually been there! On Wednesday 6th, the girls had a fantastic time at the Orlando Tree Trek Adventure Park. They have been wanting to go on a 'proper' high ropes course for a very long time and this newly opened attraction was the perfect antidote to Disney, as well as having no queues! On Tuesday 5th, it was time for our first day at Disney World. The girls couldn't wait so they were up and ready by 7am! Susan had read the guide books and planned the itinerary; The secret to a successful Disney trip is to know what you want to see and do and plan accordingly. We had our 'fastpasses' booked (queue jumping tickets for rides) and were ready with sunhats, drinks, snacks and rain ponchos for the log flume ride! We had a wonderful and exhausting day. On Monday 4th we visited the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, site of American space launches and home of the Atlantis space shuttle. It was an amazing experience to see the US space program; A bus tour of the vast site took us past the launch pads, vehicle assembly buildings, launch control center and various shuttle transporters. We also saw the huge Apollo 5 rocket and the incredible Atlantis shuttle as well as other rockets and equipment in the 'Rocket Garden'. On Sunday 3rd we enjoyed a lovely relaxing day catching up with our American friend Kim (who we met at university in Sheffield) and her family who live in Florida. Her girls, Elliana and Sadie, had a great time with Claudia and Kerstin.
On Saturday 2nd April we set off on the long (took us 10 hours!) drive to Orlando for our highly anticipated Spring Break trip. |
